Finding the sources of irradiance variation at sunspot minimum

چکیده
In 2006-2007 the Solar Bolometric Imager (SBI) will operate in the polar stratosphere where near-space conditions can be attained for 10 to 30 days. The instrument will provide bolometric (wavelength-integrated light) and color temperature images of the Sun. At the upcoming sunspot minimum, SBI observations will be able to detect subtle sources of solar irradiance variation with the least confusion by signals from the magnetic fields. This is the best observational approach to characterizing potential causes of the long-term irradiance variations. Possible predicted sources of secular variability include torsional waves and meridional flow variations. SBI uses a 30-cm diameter F/12 Dall-Kirkham telescope with uncoated mirrors, and neutral density filters to provide broadband (bolometric) sensitivity that varies only by ±7% over the wavelengths from 0.31 μm to 2.6 μm. Inferred solar irradiance variations will be compared with space based full-disk radiometric measurements.

Variation of Solar Irradiance and Mode Frequencies during Maunder Minimum
Using the sunspot numbers reported during the Maunder minimum and the empirical relations between the mode frequencies and solar activity indices, the variations in the total solar irradiance and 10.7 cm radio flux for the period 1645 to 1715 is estimated. We find that the total solar irradiance and radio flux during the Maunder minimum decreased by 0.19% and 52% respectively, as compared to th...

Context. The space missions MOST, COROT and Kepler are going to provide us with highprecision optical photometry of solar-like stars with time series extending from tens of days to several years. They can be modelled to obtain information on stellar magnetic activity by fitting the rotational modulation of the stellar flux produced by the brightness inhomogeneities associated with photospheric ...
متن کاملReconstruction of solar irradiance using the Group sunspot number
We present a reconstruction of total solar irradiance since 1610 to the present based on variations of the surface distribution of the solar magnetic field. The latter is calculated from the historical record of the Group sunspot number using a simple but consistent physical model. Our model successfully reproduces three independent data sets: total solar irradiance measurements available since...
متن کاملEvolution of the Sun's Spectral Irradiance Since the Maunder Minimum
Because of the dependence of the Sun's irradiance on solar activity, reductions from contemporary levels are expected during the seventeenth century Maunder Minimum. New reconstructions of spectral irradiance are developed since 1600 with absolute scales traceable to spacebased observations. The long-term variations track the envelope of group sunspot numbers and have amplitudes consistent with...
